Through this window you have shown me
childhood memories now but sand
the coal fields and the steam trains
of your life, now forgotten land
the coldness of this room I feel
the snows on frosted pane
where those winter winds cut through you
but your love and faith remained
little comforts did you have here
basic needs they filled your days
a little food, some wood, some firelight
and at the end of day, you prayed
two children you did raise here
where Bren and Kath once played
but they cursed the battle of the Somme
and wish you could have stayed
but I stand in quiet admiration
for the soldier who was never sad
for you see this gallant soldier
to me, was just, granddad.
